Finding a Gym – Things To Avoid

With so many gyms to choose from, selecting a fitness center that is right for you can sometimes be challenging. Find out what to look for when finding a gym.

I have lifted in dozens of gyms across the United States and have also worked as a personal trainer in many as well. There always seems to be one thing that is a turn off about every gym I have ever been to. Here is a collection of things to keep an eye on so that you don’t end up in the wrong gym with a never-ending contract.

1) Cleanliness. You make your first impression of a gym the second you walk through the doors. Look around and take a couple of breaths. Are the floors tile, if so are they shiny and clean? Are there carpets, if so are they vacuumed and stain free? This might not seem like a big deal but how clean a gym is directly affects the quality of service that you receive as a member. I worked at a gym once that had mold growing all across the ceiling. That definitely did not get there over night!

2) People. No one wants to eat at an empty restaurant, so why would anyone want to lift weights at an empty gym? I understand that it can be a luxury to be able to lift and not have to wait to use a bench or machine, but having only a couple of people workout at prime time should be a red flag.

3) Location. Not only where is the gym located, but how far away is it from your house, school, or where you work? Going from one of those locations straight to the gym is convenient because it can save you a trip and some gas. I once traveled 45 minutes to workout at a certain gym. The commute was not worth the workout, no matter how awesome it was.

4) Price. Everyone has their own budget, but if you think of all of the qualities that a gym is capable of having, their gym price better match what they offer. Some gym memberships are as low as $10 a month, and I have seen many that are hundreds of dollars a month. What comes with a price is also a contract. Always make sure that you read all of a contract so that you aren’t locked into something that you may not want to continue with in the future. Taking a couple of minutes to read a few lines could save you hundreds of dollars.

5) Equipment. This is very important and can ultimately make or break anyone’s decision to join a gym. Imagine if a power-lifter wanted to workout at a gym, and the dumbbells only went up to 50 pounds. I myself have worked out at a gym where the dumbbells only went up to 65 pounds. It was painful. Gyms with little to no equipment should be another major red flag.
